What Is ARVD/C?

ARVD/C (Arrhythmogenic-Right-Ventricular-Dysplasia/Cardiomyopathy) is a heart condition that can cause irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias) and eventually heart failure if left untreated mainly due to weakening of the heart muscles making it difficult to push blood as effectively as it should normally do. Thus, the patient suffers from poor circulation issues as a direct consequence of problems with the heart’s electrical system of the patient. This condition mainly affects the right ventricle, which is the heart chamber that pushes the deoxygenated blood towards the lungs for oxygenation and cleaning purposes. This condition is characterized by an abnormal heart rhythm and can often lead to heart failure.

Causes

Even though the exact cause of ARVD/C is unknown, it is thought to be due to a combination of genetic and/or environmental factors and even both. The other associated conditions that can result in ARZVD/C include diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and any known history of problems with electrical conduction of the sinoatrial node which is a specialized tissue located at the top of the right upper chamber of the heart. This SA node not only regulates the contractions and relaxation cycle of the heart muscles but is also responsible to maintain normal heart rhythm.

Symptoms

The most common symptom of ARVD/C is irregular heartbeats. Other accompanying symptoms of ARVD/C include shortness of breath, chest pain, fatigue, lightheadedness, dizziness, and fainting spells. Any combination of these symptoms may lead the patient to suffer a sudden cardiac arrest and even death.

Diagnosis

ARVD/C is typically diagnosed by obtaining the patient’s complete medical history, physical examination, and a combination of a variety of diagnostic tests such as ECG (electrocardiogram) and echocardiogram, and cardiac MRI. A diagnosis of ARVD/C may also be made based on the presence of certain genetic mutations.

Treatment

There is no cure for ARVD/C, but treatment can help manage the symptoms and prevent complications. Treatment options include lifestyle changes, medications, pacing & defibrillation, and, in some unfortunate cases, even surgery. The goal of treatment for ARVD/C is to control the heart’s rhythm, heart’s electrical system, and heart failure.
