What Causes Chest Pain?

There are many possible causes of chest pain, and some causes are more serious than others. Some of them include:

  • Muscle strain: This can happen if you overuse or injure your chest muscles.
  • Indigestion: This can cause a burning sensation in your chest.
  • Heartburn: This is a common cause of chest pain. This tends to happen in case of stomach acid backing up into the esophagus.
  • Angina: This is chest pain that occurs when your heart muscle doesn’t get enough oxygen.

Treatment 

The treatment varies as per the underlying cause(s). Some common treatments include the ones mentioned underneath:

  • Medications are recommended, such as nitroglycerin in case of cardiac conditions.
  • If the pain is due to heartburn or indigestion, antacids or other medications can be taken to relieve the pain. 
  • If the pain is due to muscle strain, rest and ice may be all that is needed. 
  • More serious conditions such as heart attack or pneumonia will require more aggressive treatment.
